New Students Guide

A guide to answer questions commonly asked by new students at Florida Tech.

Sustainability

Here at Florida Tech, we are proud of our ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, including multiple facilities that have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council (USBBC).

During your time at Florida Tech, you will have a variety of opportunities to contribute to a more sustainable world through such resources as:.

Student Organization for Sustainability Action

Florida Tech offers a wide variety of organizations in which you can choose to participate.

If you are particularly interested in becoming engaged in sustainable and green initiatives, with a focus on campus and the surrounding community, consider joining the Student Organization for Sustainability Action (SOSA).

Recycling

Florida Tech recycles a variety of types of materials.  Clearly marked drop-off locations for recyclable items are distributed throughout the campus.

As shown in the image below, these locations will often include separate receptacles for non-recyclable materials and different types of recyclables, such as plastics versus paper products.

Solar-powered Recharging Stations

A series of solar-powered recharging stations are provided along the walkways north of the Crawford Building.  As shown in the image below, the charging stations are painted in Florida Tech's crimson red and incorporate an umbrella, table and seating for you and some friends.

Bottle Filling Stations

Florida gets hot and it's important to stay hydrated.

Refill your reusable water bottles at bottle filling stations located at locations throughout the campus, including on every floor of the Evans Library (by the elevator). To see the locations of all of the filling stations:

As shown in the picture below, each bottle filling station incorporates a water fountain and, near the top, displays a readout indicating how many disposable bottles have been eliminated through its use.
