The page numbers are appearing in the header or footer correctly but when you switch to page view the page number has disappeared.
Typically this has to do with the Word trying to overflow text to adjust due to a graphic or table on the page. Try adjusting the spacing on the page, possibly even using the enter key to break the page in a more natural way.
