Web Accessibility

An essential guide for librarians to support them in applying web accessibility criteria to their online research guides.

Layout

Tables

Avoid using tables for layout purposes because they can result in an unorganized reading order for individuals using assistive technologies. In addition, knowledge of the code is necessary.

PDFs

Creating accessible PDFs or fixing accessibility problems in existing PDF files is complicated and time-consuming. An Adobe Acrobat Pro license is required.

  • Consider accessibility before you convert a document to PDF.
  • Avoid image-based PDF's that are entirely inaccessible.
  • Replace a PDF with a web page or a Word document.

If you'd like to check the accessibility of any documents in your guides, you can use PAVE - a free online tool that checks PDF accessibility, makes automatic corrections, and guides you through any remaining issues.
