Web Accessibility

An essential guide for librarians to support them in applying web accessibility criteria to their online research guides.

Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks - a link that takes you from one domain to another and should be underlined by default. It can be referred to simply as a web address, or when used within a web page, it is called a hyperlink

Best Practices:

  • Link text should provide a clear indication of the link destination.
  • Put the linked text at the end of the sentence so the student gets the context before they get to the link.
  • Links should open in the same browser window to avoid confusing users with cognitive disabilities or mobile devices.

Avoid these phrases with embedded links:

  •  Here
  •  More
  •  More Info
  •  Info

When the link goes to a file, add the kind of file in the link text:

  •  Brochure (PDF)
  •  Slides (PPT)
  •  Video Transcript (Word)
