Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

An introduction to Generative AI (GenAI) and how to use it ethically and effectively in coursework.

Academic Concerns

Some concerns of educators about using Gen AI for coursework:

  • Cheating - use of AI chatbots to generate written content for assignments, potentially engaging in academic dishonesty and plagiarism that can be challenging to detect.
  • Incorrect information, including hallucination references.
  • Undermines critical thinking - users may be more prone to accepting GenAI results without critical analysis.
  • Undermines problem-solving - users may become less interested in learning and practicing research and problem-solving skills.
  • Intellectual Property - AI models are frequently trained on copyrighted works without the author's permission. This raises legal and ethical questions about content ownership.
