New Students Guide

A guide to answer questions commonly asked by new students at Florida Tech.

Finding Your Way Around

So, you are new on campus, and your class schedule (or somebody) is telling you that, at a certain time, you must be in a certain room of a certain building.  And you have no idea where that is.

Perfectly understandable!

If you happen to be in (or near) the library, please feel free to ask at the iDesk on the ground floor.  A lot of the people there will be students who, not so long ago, were in the same situation.

Otherwise, though, there are some useful resources that can help you get your bearings, including:

Campus Maps

A quick way to find a location (or locations) on campus is to access the online campus map.

As you zoom in on the campus map, labels will be displayed for the individual buildings.

The ribbon at the top of the map, which is shown in the following image, is the key to its effective use.

Ribbon

If you have the name of specific building, try the following:

  1. Click on Search.
  2. Type the name (or part of the name) into the search box
  3. Click on the name in the search results that matches what you want.
  4. The map will zoom in on the building and display it with a dark outline.

An alternative is to click on Menu on the ribbon. This will display a list of sites of interest along the left side of your screen, as shown in the following image:

Menu

The Menu can also be used to display a variety of other sites of interest, such as the Admissions Department, ATMs, Bicycle Repair Stations, Emergency Phones, Food service locations, Medical Service locations, and Water Bottle Fill Stations.

Clicking on "Printable Map" in the ribbon will take you to a PDF showing a map of only the main campus with a list of buildings and their corresponding grid locations on the map. Contrary to standard practice, the "North" direction is to the left side (rather than the top) of the page. This map is generally less information-rich than the online version.

Botanical Gardens

Many members of the campus community enjoy visiting our botanical garden as a way to relax and enjoy a bit of nature without leaving campus.  An online map is available to help you in exploring the Botanical Garden.
