Citation Managers are software applications that allow you to:

  • collect and organize your research
  • format citations for written assignments
  • share sources with group members or professors

Citation Managers (Zotero, Mendeley, Endnote Basic)

Citation managers make citing your sources easier.  A citation manager is a software application that allows you to:

  • import/export citations/references from library databases, library catalogs, and the Internet.
  • gather, store, and organize your citations/references and other related information (pdf files, online articles, etc.).
  • format citations/references and generate bibliographies quickly in a variety of styles (MLA, APA, IEEE, Chicago, etc.).
  • Share information (citations and documents) with group member, colleagues, etc.

Zotero, which is free to use and download; EndNote Basic from Web of Science; and MENDELEY ( 


Mendeley is a free online citation manager that allows you to store citation information and create bibliographies.  With Mendeley you can also add and organize your PDFs, share information with other scholars, and look at other members' research publications. To download Mendeley go to:
