Open access (OA) is an ideal in scholarly communication whereby scholarship is made freely available online to anyone anywhere, with no charges imposed for access.
Open access repositories are usually organized around a particular subject or institution. The Scholarship Repository of Florida Institute of Technology provides permanent, open access to journal articles, research reports, conference papers, data sets, theses and dissertations, and other scholarly works created by Florida Institute of Technology faculty and students.
PLOS is a driving force in the OA movement demonstrating how this model can work effectively. It publishes seven peer-reviewed open-access journals, which can be found in the Evans Library's A to Z Journals list.
