Search Strategies

This assignment requires you to find several scholarly journal articles and/or conference papers published within the last 5 years.  An exhaustive search, as for a thesis or dissertation, is not required.

A simple search strategy can be:

  • Form a question or sentence describing what you are looking for.
  • Enter a broad concept into the database search box. The database may "Auto Suggest" terms from its thesaurus. Pay attention to the fields you may select for each search term.
  • Find the column to the left or right on your results page to "refine" or "limit" your results by subject, year, document type, language, etc.
  • Consult the article records of interest to read abstracts and  find related terms to search.

For a  more directed search strategy:

  • Form a question or sentence describing what you are looking for
  • List the concepts reflected in your question or sentence
  • Think of possible synonyms for each concept and list them.
  • Using the Advanced Search boxes of the database you are using, enter your search terms as follows: (Concept 1 OR synonym) AND (Concept 2 OR synonym) AND (Concept 3 OR synonym). Pay attention to the fields you may select for each search term
  • Find the column to the left or right on your results page to "refine" or "limit" your results by subject, year, document type, language, etc.
  • Consult the article records of interest to read abstracts and  find related terms to search.

Keep in mind that your literature search process may take several cycles of searching, reading, and refining in order to find appropriate articles/conference papers and be ready to write your report.
