Starting a Business?: Industry and Market Research at the Evans Library

This guide serves as an introduction to library resources and services that support the field of entrepreneurship.

Steps in the Process

Not sure where to begin the industry or market analysis process? Try the steps below.

  1. Determine which industry or industries your business fits into by first locating the relevant NAICS or SIC codes. These industry codes reveal how the industry is perceived in the hierarchy of business sectors.  You can use these codes to search in many of our databases.
  2. Look for sources that cover the industry. These include industry and market research reports, news sources, and various databases, as discussed in the Industry and Market Research tab. Note also our Statistics resources, which can help you locate key numbers such as market growth rates and a company's share of the market.
  3. It's good to know about the potential competitors in your industry. See our Company research guide for help with this.

      Industry Codes

      • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) supersedes the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system (see below). There is a keyword search and tables to convert from SIC to NAICS and vice-versa. A complete overview of the NAICS scheme is also available.
      • Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Search
Browse by category or search by keyword to obtain the 4-digit SIC code for a product or service. This site uses the 1987 version of the SIC manual, which is superseded by NAICS (see above).
