Using Reference Sources

Reference sources are a good way to begin the research process because they:

  • summarize and clarify a topic.
  • define unfamiliar terms.
  • provide brief, factual information.
  • identify other relevant information sources.

They include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, manuals, atlases, almanacs, mathematical tables, yearbooks and statistical sources.
